Election thoughts

One would hope that I add something to the world- be it good, bad, or indifferent- Me

I want to start this post by acknowledging that I'm not writing this to change anyone's mind, and that I'm not sure I have any answers myself...

Initially I was excited about McCain. I realize he's old, but I think that he has a lot of experience related to being President. I think he has some good ideas. Honestly, I think I was about McCain because I was annoyed that Hillary lost. Hmm... When I look at Obama I'm nervous. He doesn't seem to have the experience that I think the President should have. But, then again, I think we need some changes, and I think that a lot of his positions are 'spot-on'.

Let's talk about vice presidents. I'm annoyed on both sides. I think that Palin is a capable woman, but I worry about her new son, and her daughters soon-to-be child. She, and her family, seem to be very capable, but again, I worry. Is it bad that I don't worry the same way about Obama's somewhat young family the same way? Some of her thoughts about our country seem so backwards. But I am more concerned about Biden. He's older than McCain, and I think that some of his ideas just aren't the best either....he seems to waver a lot on different issues, and his past political campaigns are riddled with lies.

Just some musings...

I worry great deal about a vice-president who believes that god would not let global warming happen, and similarly about a president who doesn't believe that insurance companies should have the same incentives to cover birth control that they do viagra. But then, I am a fist-pounding liberal, so I guess that's expected.

When I'm judging candidates for president, I tend to look at their ability to be a crisis-manager, and particularly a commander-in-chief. That's my take on the Presidency; sure they influence policy, but they really earn their pay when everything goes to pieces. On that scale I, personally, feel a lot more comfortable with McCain than with Obama. I haven't seen a single sign that Obama will be able to make good calls under fire.

Of course, not everyone has my view of the presidency.

mccain is 6 years older than biden.

while it may be true that a president does not have the ability to draft his own legislation, he certainly has a large effect on what legislation is passed and upheld between veto power and all the various people a president has the ability to appoint to power (especially supreme court judges.)

i'm not sure we've had the opportunity to really judge whether either has the ability to make good decisions under pressure, and i certainly won't accept that being held prisoner for 5 years qualifies one to do so. given the tendency for the mind to degrade over time in many ways i would rather have a 47 year old than a 72 year old in the hot seat. on the other hand there is a lot to be said for experience.

That is the essential balancing act, isn't it? Of course while health tends to degrade and experiance tends to accrue over time, they don't do so for everyone at the same rate.
